Slug are kinda like a westcoast version of early Unsane. In fact, they actually shared the same label for a bit and even released a split 7" (which I'll post at a later date) on that label.

Slug are noisy. Noise at its finest. Noisy guitar rock. Noisy rockin' droning jams. Solid guitar based noise rock. Get the point? Good stuff. Really good stuff.

This record was recorded at Poop Alley in LA back in 1992 and was released as an edition of 200. It has Godstopper on side A and side B is blank. One of their rarest records and one of their best. Enjoy because I do...more to come.

One of their more rare early singles back when Charlie Ondras and Pete Shore were still holding down the rhythm section (RIP Charlie), these songs were also included on the retrospective Matador LP Unsane Singles 89-92 (which is somewhat rare in its own right). Classic NYC noise rock. Pre-metallic Unsane. My preferred version of the band with Charlie's tribal beats and Pete's fuzzed out rockin' bass backing Chris Spencer's tough guy guitar/vox. Killer stuff.

Ricaine was a three-piece noise-rock band from Melbourne, Australia. They were active from 1994 to 2001 mostly playing shows in their native Australia. In 1997 the came to the US and played some shows across the country including The South By Southwest Music Conference. That same year they also recorded this CD. It was recorded and mixed by Bob Weston at Chicago Recording Company and Electrical Audio Recording. They have other releases, none as good as this in my opinion. This one is some solid Chicago influenced noise-rock from down under.

Jesus Christ Superfly were one of my favorite Austin punk rock bands in the early 90's. I was lucky enough to see them live in 1995 at The Golden West Saloon in Albuquerque right after I moved out West. This record was released on Austin's Rise Records (which was known for their cool screen-printed record sleeves...this one done by Frank Kozik) and it features two top notch songs with the b-side being arguably their best. I have a few other releases by the band including a full length vinyl LP also on Rise Records which I may upload in the future. If you like straight up catchy punk rock...check this out.

Containing somewhat common Jesus Lizard songs (The Art of Self Defense and Nub), this record also had the same two tracks on both sides, a photocopied paper sleeve and was given away for free inside a zine out of London called Fear And Loathing. Nothing fancy...still cool. But...it is rather rare in that fact that it features two live tracks recorded from the same sessions as Seasick on the Bang CD (live at Brixton Academy May 9th 1992). The tracks are of a very high quality and were engineered by John Loder. I don't know if the intention of this recording was for an official live release that ended up being shelved or what, but the quality lends itself to the possibility. This one is a solid live Lizard recording while they were still at the top of their game. "English style Duane...give it to 'em...pump the volume".

Spazzcore, noise, crust-punk, queercore and even screamo are genres that have been used to describe this band (I personally take offense to the last description). Probably best described as extremely noisy and experimental Spazzcore (they even had a violin player in addition to the usual guitar, bass and drums), this band was based out of Olympia Washington and featured two members of Mukilteo Fairies and two members who would later go on to form Tight Bros From Way Back When. This was their debut release and has eight intense tracks crammed onto this little piece of wax. I don't know how many and I am not familiar with any releases they put out after this, but this one is some really good supersonic hardcore noise punk.

This was the debut release by the band Mule. To this day they are still one of my all-time favorite bands. This single featured the original lineup of PW Long and Kevin "Keb" Munro & Jim Kimball (the original rhythm section of Laughing Hyenas). Killer country/blues influenced noise rock.

Like Bastards, Babes In Toyland were another late 80's band out of Minneapolis on Treehouse Records. This was their debut single (which I have heard was also a Sub Pop Singles Club release even though I purchased it outright at Exclusive Company in Green Bay the same year it was released). The band gained some minor mainstream success during the whole early 90's grunge/alternative music thing and had other releases on labels such as Twin Tone, Reprise and even Warner Music Records. Singer/guitarist Kat Bjelland also had a stint in the band Crunt which featured her then husband Stuart Gray (Lubricated Goat) and Russell Simins (Jon Spencer Blues Explosion).While I can't vouch for anything they released after this record, this one has stood the test of time as a pretty good noisy punk record.

This record was my introduction to the hyperspeed bluegrass of the Bad Livers. It contains a killer cover of Iggy Pop's Lust For Life and was produced by Paul Leary of The Butthole Surfers who would also go on to produce their debut LP on Touch and Go / Quarterstick Records. This one is obviously not for everybody. It is real bluegrass music (albeit with a punk rock sensibility).

A rough gruff three-piece noise rock outfit featuring Joachim Breuer (Janitor Joe, Gnomes Of Zurich) on guitar/vocals, Bastards hailed from Minneapolis and had a handful of releases on Treehouse and Glitterhouse Records through the dawn of the 1990's. This one was produced by Butch Vig and was released prior to their legendary (at least the photo on the back of the album was legendary) Monticello LP. The A-side of this record is also on Monticello. The B-side "Motor City Kid" is no available elsewhere.

This band featured Dave Riley of Big Black. Dave played bass on these three tracks and even "sang" on one song. I've always liked this record a lot. It's some extreme in-your-face noisy noise rock. I believe this was their only release.

This release features Bill Hobson (Killdozer) and Tom Hazelmeyer (Halo Of Flies). It was the last band both Hobson or Hazelmeyer would be in. It is very reminiscent of Halo Of Flies. Full on Am Rep scuzz rock. This one kicks ass.

Released long after their "Where The Wild Things Are" Boner Records days, this 7" was put out in 1998 on Frank Kozik's Man's Ruin Records. It was their first release since regrouping after singer Sam McBride/Sammytown was released from a six year prison stint for killing his girlfriend in 1989. This was released on yellow colored vinyl and does have a little hiss and pop (which seems to be the nature of colored vinyl/picture discs), but it still sounds pretty good and it is Fang after all. Classic Berkeley CA hardcore punk rock.

OK...here is a true God Bullies release. Recorded at "Albini's House" on "good equipment". This record was released on Radial Records (distributed by Matador) back in 1995. Post-Hand Over Head, this record was a great latter day God Bullies release. Mike Hard pulls no punches.

Here is another Hand Over Head release. This one was a picture disc released on Sympathy For The Record Industry back in the early 90s. It's another great single by the band (the b-side kicks ass). The quality of the recording is much like the previous Hand Over Head record. It's a bit scratchy. Picture discs always seem to suffer sonically.

I've been on a God Bullies kick since the Am Rep 25 thing in Minneapolis a few weeks back and decided to pull out some Hand Over Head releases for old times sake and I am glad I did. I forgot what a great band this was. They were a Mike Hard side project that really doesn't sound too different than the God Bullies but maybe a bit more catchier/straightforward. The only downfall to it all is that my Hand Over Head records were played with a vengeance at many a house party back in the day and they suffer from a bit of "scratchiness". I hope some of you vinyl enthusiasts appreciate the "vintage sound". This was released on Tear It Up Records back in 1992 with a limited edition of 1000 pressed.
